Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment

Unlike what you may have heard, the purpose of a root canal procedure is not to put you into a lot of pain. It is to save your infected tooth. Understandably, as the procedure can be uncomfortable, you are probably feeling a bit uneasy. Let’s explain in short what root canal treatment is, what are the signs showing you need it and most importantly, why you might need it.

Inside a tooth, there is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains nerves, connective tissue and blood vessels. It extends from the crown of the tooth all the way to its roots – where it connects to the surrounding tissues. Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected.

Causes

Common causes include decay, injury (e.g a fall) as well as repeated dental procedures. Root canal treatment is the removal of the bacteria from the infected root canal system. The only alternative, in most cases, is tooth extraction.

Symptoms

A pulp infection is highly probable if you have the following symptoms:

  • Pain when biting or chewing.
  • Eating or drinking cold food and beverages hurts.
  • You have a loose tooth.
  • Pus oozing from a tooth.
  • Facial swelling.
  • The tooth changes colour and becomes darker.

Risks

If left untreated, such an infection can and will exacerbate all the aforementioned symptoms. Given enough time, the infection becomes severe enough that the only solution is to remove the infected tooth completely.
