Root Canal Treatment
Unlike what you may have heard, the purpose of a root canal procedure is not to put you into a lot of pain. It is to save your infected tooth. Understandably, as the procedure can be uncomfortable, you are probably feeling a bit uneasy. Let’s explain in short what root canal treatment is, what are the signs showing you need it and most importantly, why you need it.
Inside a tooth there is a soft tissue called pulp. The pulp contains nerves, connective tissue and blood vessels. It extends from the crown of the tooth all the way to its roots – where it connects to the surrounding tissues. Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected.
Common causes include decay, injury (e.g a fall) as well as repeated dental procedures. Root canal treatment is the removal of the bacteria from the infected root canal system. The only alternative, in most cases, is tooth extraction.
